Teacher of the Year
Wilson Community College annually recognizes a full-time faculty member who exemplifies the highest standards of instruction by bestowing upon them the honor of being Teacher of the Year. With that honor comes the automatic nomination for the North Carolina Community College System’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
The Office of the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services will accept nominations for Wilson Community College's Teacher of The Year between March 1 and April 1. The following criteria and procedures will guide the process.
Criteria
The Teacher of the Year should promote the College's mission by exhibiting a combination of the following characteristics:
- Upgrades course with current discipline-specific content and innovations in technology.
- Displays enthusiasm and knowledge of subject matter that challenges students with level-appropriate criteria.
- Adapts teaching and assessment methods to diverse learning styles for students.
- Displays leadership/support roles beyond classroom with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Collaborates with students in a way that promotes academic and personal growth to foster effectiveness in the community.
Nominations
Nomination forms are available in the Office of the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services (B103), in the College Library, in the College Bookstore, and in the Registration Center. All completed nomination forms must be returned to the Office of the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services by the announced deadline.
Recommendations will be solicited as follows:
- Associate Deans to make one selection each based on student evaluations, self- evaluations, and classroom observations.
- Individual instructors to make one selection each based on criteria stated on the nomination form. Selections may be inside or outside individual departments.
- Students to make one selection each based on criteria stated on the nomination form.
- The Vice President of Instruction and Student Services’ office will assemble all nominees as "criteria" only (no names) and provide an anonymous list to the Selection Team.
Selection
- The Selection Team will consist of two of the most recent recipients of "Teacher of the Year" who are current employees of Wilson Community College, the Dean of Student Services, and the current SGA president and vice president.
- The Selection Team will evaluate and recommend two instructors, one first choice and one second, to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services who will make a recommendation to the President. The President will make the final decision.
