Congratulations to Angela Herring who was chosen as the recipient of the Wilson Community College 2008 Teacher of the Year Award.  Ms. Herring is an instructor in the Information Systems Security program.  Ms. Herring started her teaching career in the public school system before moving to the community college level.  Ms. Herring has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Mount Olive College and a master’s degree in Instructional Technology from East Carolina University.  Ms. Herring also recently completed a graduate certificate in Information Assurance from East Carolina University.

Ms. Herring is an IC3 Authorized Program Instructor which is a certification designed for individuals who are qualified as teachers of basic computing and Internet literacy skills.  Ms. Herring has also achieved a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.  These certifications evaluate overall comprehension of Office programs, ability to use advanced features, and ability to integrate Office programs with other software programs.  Ms. Herring also has certifications as a Certified Internet Web Associate and as a CompTIA Security+ Certified Professional.  The CompTIA Security+ certification proves competency with information security topics such as infrastructure, communication, and operational and organizational security.

Ms. Herring is an innovative instructor who uses the latest technology in hands-on activities that allow students to practice the skills they are learning in the classroom.  Ms. Herring is very involved in professional development opportunities including serving as an officer with the North Carolina Computer Instructor’s Association (NCCIA).  Ms. Herring is also active on campus committees and the Faculty Senate.  Ms. Herring is the author of “Email Compliance and Management in Education”, which appeared in Infosec Writers in May 2007.
