The Central Sterile Processing curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply.
Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and nonsterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Also students will learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process.
Graduates will receive a certificate and may be eligible to apply to take the National Institute for Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel Examination (CBSPD). Employment opportunities include surgery centers, dialysis facilities, and central processing units in hospitals.
A. Admission Policy
The applicant will be required to meet steps I-III before admission. Each step of the admission procedure must be completed before moving to the next step. This curriculum begins in spring semester based on clinical space available.
Step I Application Process (1 - 3 in Step I must be complete by September 1)
Step II Conditional Acceptance
Step III Acceptance
General Information
B. Criminal Background and Urine Drug Screen Statements
In the Central Sterile Processing certificate, students are assigned to clinical rotations in a variety of facilities. Based upon regulations of the facility, the facility may require that all students have a criminal background check and/or a urine drug screen.
The agency will review the criminal background based upon their policies and if the student is found to not meet their policy for acceptance for clinical practice, the agency will refuse to allow the student to participate in the clinical experience. If the student is prohibited from participating in clinical at any agency, the student will be dismissed from the program due to an inability to progress and complete the curriculum.
The agency can require a urine drug screen prior to clinical or at any time during the clinical that the student appears impaired. If the student tests positive for a drug (without a prescription in their name for the drug) or any illicit drugs, the agency may refuse to allow the student to participate in the clinical experience. If the student is prohibited from participating in the clinical experience at any agency, the student will be dismissed from the program due to an inability to progress and complete the curriculum.
It is assumed that all costs associated with criminal background checks and drug screenings required by the clinical agency are the responsibility of the student and will be obtained through the source recommended by the clinical agency and not independently by the student.

The Lateral Entry curriculum provides a course of study leading to the development of the general pedagogy competencies needed to become certified to teach by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Students currently working in the school system as Lateral Entry candidates should meet, upon graduation, the general pedagogy competencies within the first three years of teaching, including a minimum of six semester hours per school year. Additional requirements, such as pre-service training and passing the PRAXIS, are required for licensure.
As of Fall 2007, students no longer need to be working within the public school system to pursue this certificate.
