Applications and medical forms for the July 13, 2010, academy must be completed and returned by June 1, 2010, to ensure acceptance.

Wilson Community College has an excellent history of preparing top quality firefighters. Approximately 96% of the firefighters graduating from the Cadet program have been successful in obtaining employment from fire departments all across North Carolina.

Mission
The academy is about more than just certifications. Its purpose is to prepare the participant for the job.

Its mission is to instill discipline, character, professionalism, teamwork, integrity, credibility and the physical ability, knowledge and skills to perform the job in a professional and safe manner while preparing the individual for the job.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Wilson Community College Fire & Rescue Cadet Academy is a seventeen (17) week program that allows the cadet upon completion to become certified in Firefighter I & II, OSHA Hazardous-Material Technician, R/T: Rescue Technician, NIMS (ICS) 100 & 200, and D/O: Emergency Vehicle Driver. An additional (5) week, Emergency Medical Technician Certification class is also available to all cadets. The program operates in strict accordance with regulations mandated by the North Carolina Community College System and the North Carolina Fire/Rescue Commission.

The academy also consists of live fire LP Gas Training, Rapid Intervention Training, Live Burn Training in acquired structures, History of the Fire Service, and Interviewing Techniques. Physical Fitness is conducted each morning.

The Fire and Rescue Academy is scheduled two times each year (January-May and July-November). All classes are held at the:

800 North Pine Street, Wilson, N. C.
Classes are scheduled 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.

ADMISSION OF CADETS
Candidates must be affiliated or employed (full or part-time) with a fire/rescue agency to be eligible for enrollment in the Academy. A letter of recommendation or confirmation of employment must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. In the event the employing or affiliated agency withdraws its support, the cadet will be immediately dismissed. The Academy will give priority admission to candidates holding full-time employment with fire/rescue agencies.

All candidates must have completed an application and a medical examination within six (6) months prior to admission. A completed F-2 physical examination form, cholesterol-screening test, drug screening test and a criminal history background check results must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. Additional information may be requested at the discretion of the Fire/Rescue Training Coordinator.

COSTS
Registration fee is $175.00. If candidates are affiliated or employed with a fire or rescue department the registration fees will be waived. Affiliated agencies may assist in the cost for books and uniforms. One book is required, The Essentials of Firefighting.

The following uniforms and equipment are required: Academy Uniform, Academy Physical Fitness Uniform, and National Fire Protection Association approved Turn-Out Gear and Self-contained Breathing Apparatus. Uniform and book requirement information will be included in the application package.

CERTIFICATES
Upon satisfactory completion of all academy requirements, each cadet will receive a certificate.

LODGING
Limited lodging is available at Wilson Fire/Rescue Services. They also provide a "Ride Along Program" for interested cadets.

Welcome, Registration and Requirements

All participants will report directly to the classroom. All classes will meet in the Frank L. Eagles Building, Building G. Signs will be posted with classroom location.

All pre-registrations must be received by January 15, 2010. No pre-registration fees. Walk-ins are welcome.

All classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The earlier we receive your pre-registration the more likely you are to receive your first choice. Only applicants who’s chosen class (first and second choice) does not make or is filled will be notified.

A local Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be selling lunch and snack items. Vendors have been invited.

Requirements:

The minimum age for participation in Fire and Rescue School classes is 16 years of age unless otherwise noted. All participants between the ages of 16 and 18 must bring written permission from their high school principal. Please use the release form included with the pre-registration form.

Fees:

There are no registration fees for Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, and Forestry Service personnel. All fees must be paid at registration. Please do not send fees with your pre-registration form. Note: There is a $15.00 student fee for all classes that last 16 hours or more. Checks should be made payable to Wilson Community College and all fees must be paid during registration in the classroom.

  • Out of state students and students that are not fee exempt will have to pay a $65.00 registration fee.

Basic Fire Investigation Cause and Origin

This course covers the basic procedures for determining the origin of accidental and incendiary fires. Topics include the scientific method, fire science, fire pattern analysis, ignition sources, collection and preservation of evidence, and the documentation of the fire scene.
Upon completion, students should have the basic knowledge to competently investigate accidental and incendiary fires and present those findings to the appropriate officials. (12 hrs.)

Calling The Mayday Hands-On Training for Firefighters (NFA Course)

This is a twelve-hour hands-on course that requires the State Fire Instructor to certify that the students have met the psychomotor skill requirement to call a Mayday under various emergency situations. This includes being trapped or lost in a structure, collapse situation, being hung/snagged, and falling through a roof or floor.
These conditions will be simulated using various props with the firefighter in full PPE, SCBA, and portable radio. The firefighter must perform these skills at a master level. Students who pass the written test and the hands-on practicals will receive a NFA certificate Q 133 Firefighter Safety: Calling the Mayday and a NFA certificate H 134 Calling the Mayday: Hands on Training. (12 hrs.)

REQUIREMENTS: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA required.

Driver Operator: Emergency Vehicle Driver

This class teaches the importance of safe driving skills for fire apparatus drivers. Students will learn North Carolina laws concerning apparatus drivers as well as defensive driving techniques. Students will drive on Sunday. Students must possess a valid driver’s license and must be 18 years of age. (15 hrs.)

Driver Operator: Introduction to Aerial Operations

This course is designed to introduce personnel to various types of aerial fire apparatus and their applications to emergency operations. It will include job and individual performance issues, how to identify various types of aerial apparatus, features of the design and application of aerials and elevating platforms. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to weather and terrain in placement and use of aerials. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to driver operator errors. (15 hrs.)

FFI Haz Mat Awareness

The course meets North Carolina hazardous material awareness level standards and OSHA Standard 1910.120, as recognized by the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission. (15 hrs.)

Leadership III (NFA Course)

This 2-day course provides the company officer with the basic leadership skills and tools to perform effectively in the fire service environment. The course covers when and how to delegate to subordinates, assess personal leadership styles through situational leadership, discipline subordinates, and apply coaching/motivating techniques. (12 hrs.)

Strategy and Tactics (NFA Course)

(Formerly MCTO: Tactics) STICO is designed to meet the needs of Company Officers responsible for managing the operations of one or more companies during structural firefighting operations. STICO is designed to develop the management skills needed by company officers to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. (Table Top Exercise Included). (14 hrs.)

The 21st Century Fire Officer What Are Today’s Responsibilities?

This class is designed to explain the roles, responsibilities, and liability facing today’s fire officers and how these issues correlate to the organization both in departmental administration and tactics. Upon successful completion the student will have an increased knowledge and understanding of what it takes to become a fire officer and the impact that decision making has on an organization. (4 hrs.)

Wildland Fire Suppression for Fire Departments

This course was developed by the NC Division of Forest Resources to teach fire personnel the basic knowledge needed to safely suppress wildland fires. The course covers organization, fire behavior, fire size-up, wildland urban interface tactics, tactics for hand crews, engines, tractor-plow units, fire prevention, firefighter safety including deploying a fire shelter, legal aspects as well as the different terrain and fire environments in NC.
This course also qualifies firefighters to go on wildfire assignments anywhere in NC and the southeastern US under compact mutual aid request. A database of individuals who have successfully completed this course will be used by OSFM to validate qualification prior to dispatching resources through State EOC/compact request. (12 hrs.)

Flashover Recognition and Survival

The Swede Survival Flashover System offers firefighters the opportunity to observe fire behavior and the signs that lead to the "flashover" phenomenon in a controlled setting. By creating these conditions over and over again participants are provided with the knowledge and skills to deal with this situation. The class will be lecture and hands-on dealing with fire behavior, Flashover recognition, nozzle techniques, and survival skills in relation to fire behavior. Students must have full PPE including SCBA and spare bottle. (Students can take this class on Saturday and the Live Burn class on Sunday). (Students must be 18 years of age). (8 hrs.)

Live Burn

Students must be 18 years of age. Fire Chief must sign registration. Class will consist of interior live burn structural fire fighting conducted in a new burn building located at the Wilson Fire/Rescue Services Training Center. Participants must have met the training requirements of NFPA 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions 2007. Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. (Spare SCBA Bottle if Possible). (Students can take this class on Sunday and the Flashover Recognition & Survival on Saturday). (8 hrs.)
