Health Occupations Important Information

Applications REQUIRED

Dialysis, Nurse Aide (Levels I and II), and Phlebotomy courses require an application. These are available on campus in Room B-105, or you may download them from the list below:

 

The Program Coordinator will review applications with all required copies attached as follows; 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday throughThursday in Room B-105; November 28th through December 16th. Once your application has been approved, be prepared to register and pay the $195 registration fee. No mail-in applications will be accepted.

Malpractice Insurance

Dialysis, Nurse Aide (Levels I and II), Phlebotomy, and Pharmacy Technician courses require malpractice insurance (approx. $15.00) .

Required Education

All Health Occupations courses require proof of a high school diploma, GED, or college transcript and that a copy of the student’s high school diploma or GED be kept on file.  Wilson Community College recognizes high school diplomas from regionally accredited schools, private high schools or home schools registered with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.  Wilson Community College will also accept high school diplomas from correspondence schools accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) and/or a regional accrediting agency, such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Nurse Aides wishing to check their date of registry expiration may go on-line to www.ncnar.org and click on “Verify Listing”.

Student Fees

The Division of Continuing Education recognizes and is fully supportive of clinical agencies that choose to perform drug screening, criminal background checks, or fingerprinting on students. Costs associated for these tests are the responsibility of the student. This information should be made available if requested by the clinical site.

Fees listed include registration, student technology ($5.00) and student security ($15.00). There are NO fee waivers for student technology and student security fees.

Activity Director Basic

This 60-hour course is designed to provide basic training to become an Activity Director in a health care related setting. Activity Directors for Adult Care Homes are required by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulations to complete a minimum of 50 hours in an approved Activity Director course. Activity Directors for nursing facilities are required to complete the 50-hour basic course with an additional minimum of ten hours in documentation, including the assessment and care planning process.  At registration, students must provide a copy of their high school diploma or GED. Required textbook, Activities Keep Me Going and Going, approximately $50.00. (6.0 CEU)

Medical Office Assistant

Provides training in the skills required for a medical office assistant. Course topics may include, but are not limited to, preparation of medical records, health insurance and financial records of patients, understanding medical terminology, body systems, diseases, clinical procedures used in a medical office, preparation of medical reports, handling front office operations, and/or assisting the physician and medical staff.

Pharmacy Technician Training

This 96-hour course prepares students to work in a pharmacy to assist with day to day activities under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Dialysis Technology

Prepares individuals with theoretical, technical, and clinical skills needed to maintain equipment and provide patient care to those being treated for chronic renal diseases. Successful completion of this course will prepare individuals for employment as a dialysis technician in hospitals, renal dialysis facilities, and clinics. After one year of work experience, individuals may be eligible to sit for national certification as a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician. Textbook required. (13.1 CEU)

Nurse Aide Training

Nurse Aide Level I

Limited to 20 students per class. This course prepares students to perform basic nursing skills for patients or residents in a health care related setting. Course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon successful completion of the course and the state-administered skills evaluation, the student will be eligible for listing with the Division of Health Service Regulations on the Nurse Aide Level I Registry in North Carolina as a Nurse Aide Level I. The Nurse Aide will always work under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse. Initial listing with the Division of Health Service Regulations will be in effect for two years following the skills evaluation. There will be weekend hours involved to complete the clinical requirements. Schedule may vary to meet certification requirements. Required textbook, NC Nurse Aide I. Uniforms required for clinical rotations.

Spanish for the Healthcare Worker

This 75-hour course provides an introduction to understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and apply basic concepts, display cultural awareness and communicate simple Spanish phrases to assist and understand their patients. (7.5 CEU)

Phlebotomy Training and Clinical Education

This 118-hour course prepares students to draw blood specimens from patients for testing and analyzing. A phlebotomy trainee maintains equipment used in obtaining blood specimens, masters the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients, selection of venipuncture sites, care of blood specimen, entry of the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests. Each student must complete 100 successful venipunctures. Students are required to complete venipunctures on each other under direct supervision of the instructor. There will be weekend hours involved to complete the clinical requirements; clinical hour schedules vary as approved by the clinical site. Textbook required, The Phlebotomy Workbook. Uniforms required for clinical rotation. Students are required to complete a criminal background check and drug screening upon acceptance into the program, and must purchase Malpractice Insurance before the clinical portion of the class. MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE

This two-semester program will allow the student, upon successful completion of Medical Office Assistant, Billing and Coding and HRD, to receive a certificate from Wilson Community College and also be able to sit for the Medical Office Assistant State exam. This class consists of a 75-hour Medical Office Assistant class, a 48 hour online billing and coding course, and an HRD component and CRC testing. The student will learn many aspects of running an office - from answering the phone, professionalism, completing a pre-admission physical on a patient, charting, billing and coding and much more. Costs is $195 for the Medical Office Assistant class; $120 for the online billing and coding class; and $65 for HRD (unless fee waived). Registration is November 28th through December 16th.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist  ONLINE

Provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to work in a variety of billing and coding positions in the medical field. It covers the foundations of insurance, billing, coding, and reimbursements. Students learn not only the submission of claims to the insurance carrier but reviewing medical records, verifying patient benefits, submitting a secondary claim, posting payments and appealing the insurance carrier’s decision. The second phase of this course will include ICD-9 and CPT coding. Textbooks required. (9.6 CEU)
