Your Dimension Activities

We want to know what you are doing, planning, or even just thinking about when it comes to sustainability. Are you teaching the concept of sustainability in your class? Are you purchasing green products? Have you or your students thought about your recycling behaviors since we installed recycling centers across campus? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are thinking sustainably. Sustainability is about sharing and our sustainable efforts should be visible to others and serve as a model of what it means to be sustainable. We want to know what you are doing in sustainability and invite you to submit your sustainable activities.

Jeff Cook Curriculum A new class was implemented for this year AUT-285 Intro To Alternative Fuels.
Debby Skinner Trades & Public Services In the past we have purchased drafting paper with a border to use in manual drafting as the media should be vellum or something similar (erases well and is transparent). During a spring clean up I found scrap large sheets of vellum with old school logos (still in the package). The workstudy student is cutting smaller blank sheets (minus the old logo) and I drew an original to copy from (new school logo), e-mailed it to Tim Moore. The print shop is able to print from the original to the "cut down" vellum. We won't have to scrap the old logo paper and we don't have to buy the new paper. I counted approximately 1000 sheets of the old paper.
Wendy Bailey Business/MOA I have paperless classrooms. I use Blackboard as a resource in all classes and require students to submit their assignments via Blackboard. I return graded assignments via Blackboard. I discourage printing of any kind in the lab and encourage students to study material by saving to their flash drives and reviewing it electronically.
Angela Herring Business and Technology Programs I am piloting a program for incorporation in all of the CIS 110 courses. The program involves students collaborating in a wiki to prepare a comprehensive document of resources on Green Computing. I have set up the wiki, and students in section CIS 110-01 will begin working on this next week. You can view our progress at http://green-computing.wikispaces.com/
Gregory Johnson College Transfer My ENG 111 classes write a paper at the end of the semester examining a few different things: 1) the types of sustainability, 2) the reasons why we need to focus on sustainability, and/or 3) the effects of adopting sustainable practices.
Katrina Williams College Transfer In my English 111 and English 112 classes, I require my students to write a persuasive essay with sources cited and a researched Toulmin essay on various topics related to sustainability. They are required to do research on their topic and then write an essay in which they encourage their readers to do something active related to sustainability. Here is a list of topics students are allowed to choose from:

Frances Roebuck Rampey Business and Technology Programs I have added course objectives to three of the courses I teach that address sustainability that relates to the course subject matter. They are as follows: WEB 110: Internet Web Fundamentals Objective: Explain and describe methods that the Internet and the World Wide Web can be used to reduce companies and or individuals environmental impact. Assignment: Research methods and ways that the internet can reduce environmental impact. Find two sources that you can use online, then write a one page paper about a specific method that can be used by a company or an individual to reduce their environmental impact via Internet use. Properly cite your sources. Examples include online shopping, and cloud computing, but there are many other methods as well. NOS 110: Operating Systems Concepts Objective: Establish environmentally friendly computer operation policies through administrative tools in various operating systems. Activity: Students first learn about resource management options in both Windows and Linux operating systems. They then must demonstrate how to set up resource management. Finally they must submit a one to two page Power management Policy for a small company. The company should be a small one with no more than two servers and 100 pcs. The policy must address company mandate power management rules and procedures. CTS 210: Computer Ethics Objective: Explain and analyze the impact that technology has on employment, work environment, health, and the world environment. Assignment: Students must post a Discussion board journal entry on the topic of the Environmental Impact of Technology. They also must respond to two other students posts.
Gregory H. Johnson College Transfer For my seated classes, I have been putting an increasing number of course documents and assignments on Blackboard, and I have students submit the majority of their work through Blackboard instead of printing out the assignments.
Susan Holland Allied Health/Science I don't really do activities about sustainability, but we do discuss global warming, greenhouses, and the thinning of the ozone layer when we study photosynthesis in BIO 111. Similarly, we discuss the thinning of the ozone in BIO 168 when we study skin cancer and its causes.
Lynda S Cole College Transfer Social psychology activity involving competition and cooperation. I give the students an opportunity to receive 5 or 15 extra credit points. The catch is that if more than a specified number select 15 points then no one earns any extra credit. I used this as a segue into a discussion of how we can coopperate and share the burden of caring for the planet or compete for resources and assume that others will recycle or manage scarce resources. Students usually get into a lively discussion about how we can all do a little rather than expecting massive changes by a few to make up for the rest of us. This discussion comes later in the semester. Leading up to it, I usually introduce topics regarding sustainability as we begin each new unit in the course. We then reflect back on the ideas that have been presented earlier.
Lynda S Cole College Transfer I have moved many of my syllabi, handouts, study guides and activities from a paper version to Blackboard. In my PSY-150 course alone this represents at least 30 pages per student per semester that I am no longer printing. With three sections that works out to a savings of about 2400 sheets of paper (and printing) per semester. Now that is a lot of paper!
