Sharing Our Sustainability Efforts

July 16, 2009

Wilson Community College is unconditionally dedicated to serving as a “catalyst for transformation” in the wake of the challenge of climate change. Here at Wilson, it is well understood that our climate challenges are directly connected to our economic challenges and that correcting one requires correcting the other in order to revolutionize our way of life. This is why sustainability as an overall way of life is so vital. “Sustainability is the new industrial revolution”, is  often quoted by our college President Dr. Rusty Stephens. Sustainable practices are essential now in order to ensure the continued successful existence of our planet, its resources and people in the future.

Long before the enactment of specific greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, Wilson Community College had already taken numerous steps in its practices to:

The completion of a year long campus wind study and the installation of a vertical wind turbine are long-term investments in both renewable energy technology and green workforce development. The construction of a LEED Student Services Center and the retrofitting of existing older buildings show a strong commitment to sustainable building science practices and education. A well-established campus-recycling program demonstrates a commitment to waste minimization.

Along this path, Wilson Community College has realized the importance of sharing its experiences, ideas and challenges with others. Part of having a dedicated commitment to sustainable practices is to help assist, educate and share.  Not only does this include our local community, but also our community college family. Wilson has hosted tours and visits with several North Carolina community colleges in the last year including:

This has proven to be extremely beneficial to Wilson as well as to the visiting colleges. Wilson Community College welcomes any and all community colleges to our campus. In the commitment to sustainability, we are here to share with, and learn from all.
