Growing Green Events and Courses

Wilson Community College provides quality educational programs and workshops to increase the knowledge and practice of sustainability. The College offers a variety of webinars and educational programs such as Biodiesel, Energy Awareness, and Green Advantage® for commercial contractors. Wilson Community College is committed to offering workshops and programs to develop new knowledge and skills that enable our citizens to be better stewards of the planet.

Spring 2012

** CFC Refrigerant Certification:

“EPA requires CFC Certification for all HVAC/R service personnel who work with refrigerants. This class will supply the training and knowledge to assist in preparing for the state exam required to be CFC certified.”

** Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I:

“Examines the operations, maintenance, laboratory, rules, regulations, recordkeeping, etc. of Biological Wastewater Operations on the environment; troubleshooting, process control, NCDENR-DWQ rules and requirements for the wastewater field.

**Wastewater Continuing Education 2012:

“This six hour continuing education course covers the current rules and regulations, issues and topics occurring in wastewater treatment today. Instances of facility and operator non-compliance, reporting, sanitary sewer overflows, updates on rules and regulations, etc. will be covered. The importance of proper wastewater treatment and the impacts of such on human health and the environment will be emphasized.

** COMPOSTING-VERMICULTURE

“This workshop will help turn garbage into gold! Sustainability starts with the soil, and this workshop will give the basic knowledge to convert organic household waste into a nutrient rich soil. Join us to discover how to make your own compost using simple techniques, including the use of earthworms.”

**ENERGY SAVINGS TECHNIQUES FOR BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

“This one day workshop is designed to be of great value to businesses owners of all sizes, large and small industries, facility operators and anyone interested in saving money by improving the way energy is used within your business or facility. Upon completion of this workshop, students will have an understanding of various energy savings concepts involving lighting, building codes, HVAC, motors, compressed air, renewables, strategic energy planning, and energy accounting.

**RAINWATER HARVESTING

The collecting of rainwater has been used for thousands of years as a valuable way to build reserves of rainwater for dry seasons. This workshop will give you the knowledge and tools you will need in order to construct a rainwater barrel to provide an effective way for you to keep your plants, flowers and lawn nourished and beautiful during the hot and dry spells of the summer.
