Wilson Community College is committed to the greening of our campus and engages in a variety of efforts to reduce our energy use and to promote a clean environment for our students and community. The College encourages the use of energy conservation, recycling, and the use of sustainable practices in the construction of facilities and the maintenance of our buildings and grounds.
Wilson Community College's main campus has approximately thirty-one acres, and a satellite campus, the Coastal Plain Law Enforcement Training Center, consisting of approximately three acres. The main campus has 12 buildings with a total of 204,079 sq ft. of building space and the Coastal Plain Law Enforcement Training Center has two buildings with a total of 5240 sq ft of building space, for a combined 209,319 sq ft.
The College purchases electricity, water, and gas, through Wilson Energy, the utility provider operated by the City of Wilson. Wilson Energy maintains the fourth-largest municipal distribution system in North Carolina, supplying electricity to some 33,000 households, businesses and industries.
Wilson Energy buys electricity from the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA), a non-profit group made up of 32 North Carolina cities, including Wilson, Rocky Mount, Greenville and Clayton. NCEMPA gets its energy from several power generation plants in which it has partial ownership, including the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant near Raleigh, NC. Wilson Energy also buys supplemental energy from Progress Energy, an investor-owned utility with facilities in North Carolina and Florida.
Wilson Community College began a campus wide recycling program in August 2007. Members of the Sustainability Committee, along with the recycling coordinator, have made efforts to broaden the availability of recycling. Recycling centers are located throughout campus in key traffic areas in the major hallways. Each center contains the major items the College recycles: aluminum, plastic, and paper along with a bin for waste. Signs have been placed on the bins and lids to increase visibility and usage.

Green Purchasing In 2003, our campus became passionate about environmental issues and determined to "make" Wilson Community College a "Green" Campus. In the years since our College has committed to "Going Green," we have seen the commitment move from being almost insurmountable to being what "everyone" is considering. "Going Green" or "Green Purchasing" was the first term we encountered, and more recently you hear it referred to as "Sustainability".
Green Construction "Green" or "sustainable" buildings use key resources like energy, water, materials, and land much more efficiently than buildings that are simply built to code. They also create healthier work, learning, and living environments, with more natural light and cleaner air, and contribute to improved employee and student health, comfort, and productivity. Sustainable buildings are cost-effective, saving money by reducing operations and maintenance costs, as well as by lowering utility bills.
