Student Development/Recruitment Counselor

Type of Position: Full-time

Hiring Range: $40,250 - $45,00 (Based on experience)

Job Description: Under the direction of the Director of Admissions/Student Activities, serves as primary recruitment counselor and also performs professional testing, academic counseling, and placement services to students at the college.

Essential Duties: Coordinates and facilitates student-centered recruitment strategies by serving as a liaison between the College and local schools, businesses, and community programs. Counsels prospective applicants on the admission process and opportunities through information sessions, in-person appointments, phone calls, college fairs, high school visits, etc. Reviews admissions applications, transcripts and supporting documentation specific to the admission process. Tests prospective students to determine suitability for admission and makes placement decisions based on testing, previous course credit and established guidelines. Assists students in making informed college decisions, conducts admissions interviews and advises students on program areas, specifically College Transfer options. Participates in division planning, research activities and implementation of determined plans. Serves as coordinator for selected programs, such as recruitment and retention initiatives. Maintains detailed and confidential files using written records and computer-based programs. Conducts studies to determine student outcomes and to identify reasons for student successes or lack thereof. Serves on institutional committees as appointed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of individual and group educational and occupational counseling methods and procedures. Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of the education field. Knowledge of college policies and requirements for admission and of curriculums and instructional programs. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to operate a PC and related software. Ability to administer standardized tests and interpret results. Ability to make public presentations to groups. Ability to interpret and explain State educational and college rules, regulations and policies. Ability to use strong analytical and organizational skills to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, students, parents, public school staff, and the general public.

Education and Experience: Master’s degree in Counseling, Adult Education, or a related field or a master’s degree and 18 graduate hours in counseling or a related field required. Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in recruitment, placement testing, student advising and retention preferred.
