Program Description

The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. Student Support Services (SSS) projects also may provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.

Participant Eligibility for Program Services

To receive assistance, students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a program of postsecondary education at a grantee institution. Low-income students who are first-generation college students and students with disabilities evidencing academic need are eligible to participate in SSS projects. Two-thirds of the participants in any SSS project must be either disabled or potential first-generation college students from low-income families. One-third of the disabled participants must also be low-income students.

Tutoring Services

The tutorial component offers individual and group tutoring for students requesting assistance with assignments.  The College employs students, who are selected on the basis of academic performance, to conduct tutorial sessions in English, mathematics, the sciences, and other subject areas.

Counseling

Individual and group counseling on school-related issues is available to all program participants.  Campus visitations to four-year colleges are scheduled to explore various college/career opportunities.  In addition, guest speakers, workshops, and seminars are scheduled in order to promote students’ personal growth and development.
