Wilson Community College has completed 25 consecutive Regional Cadet Fire and Rescue Training Academies since its conception in the 90's. The academy has an excellent history of preparing top quality firefighters. Approximately 96% of the firefighters graduating from the Cadet program have been successful in obtaining employment from fire departments all across North Carolina and other States that are members of the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
Mission
The academy is about more than just certifications. Its purpose is to prepare the participant for the job.
Its mission is to instill discipline, character, professionalism, teamwork, integrity, credibility and the physical ability, knowledge and skills to perform the job in a professional and safe manner while preparing the individual for the job.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Wilson Community College Fire & Rescue Cadet Academy is a seventeen (17) week program that allows the cadet upon completion to become certified in Firefighter I & II, OSHA Hazardous-Material Technician, T/R: Technical Rescuer, (ICS) 100 & 200, and D/O: Emergency Vehicle Driver.
An additional (5) week, Emergency Medical Technician Certification class is also available to all cadets. The program operates in strict accordance with regulations mandated by the North Carolina Community College System and the North Carolina Fire/Rescue Commission.
All cadets must pass the academic and physical fitness requirements in order to graduate.
The academy also consists of live fire LP Gas Training, Rapid Intervention Training, Live Burn Training in acquired structures, History of the Fire Service, and Interviewing Techniques. Physical Fitness is conducted each morning.
The Fire and Rescue Academy is scheduled two times each year (January-May and July-November). All classes are held at the:

Classes are scheduled 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
ADMISSION OF CADETS
Candidates must be a member of a volunteer fire department, employed full or part time with a fire department, or the candidate must be sponsored by a fire/rescue agency to be eligible for enrollment in the academy. A letter of recommendation or confirmation of employment must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. In the event the employing or affiliated agency withdraws its support, the cadet will be immediately dismissed. The Academy will give priority admission to candidates holding full-time employment with fire/rescue agencies.
All candidates must have completed an application and a medical examination within six (6) months prior to admission. A completed F-2 physical examination form, cholesterol-screening test, drug screening test and a criminal history background check results must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. Additional information may be requested at the discretion of the Fire/Rescue Training Coordinator.
COSTS
Registration fee is $175.00. If candidates are affiliated or employed with a fire or rescue department the registration fees will be waived. Affiliated agencies may assist in the cost for books and uniforms. One book is required, The Essentials of Firefighting, 5th edition.
The following uniforms and equipment are required: Academy Uniform, Academy Physical Fitness Uniform, and National Fire Protection Association approved Turn-Out Gear and Self-contained Breathing Apparatus. Uniform and book requirement information will be included in the application package.
CERTIFICATES
Upon satisfactory completion of all academy requirements, each cadet will receive a certificate.
LODGING
Limited lodging is available at Wilson Fire/Rescue Services. They also provide a "Ride Along Program" for interested cadets.

All pre-registrations must be received by January 14, 2012. No pre-registration fees. Walk-ins are welcome.
All classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The earlier we receive your pre-registration the more likely you are to receive your first choice. Only applicants who’s chosen class (first and second choice) does not make or is filled will be notified.
A local Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be selling lunch and snack items. Vendors have been invited.
Requirements:
The minimum age for participation in Fire and Rescue School classes is 16 years of age unless otherwise noted. All participants between the ages of 16 and 18 must bring written permission (release form) from their high school principal. Please use the release form included on the pre-registration form on this brochure.
Fees:
There are no registration fees for Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, and Forestry Service personnel. (Exceptions)
Payment
Checks should be made payable to Wilson Community College and all fees must be paid during registration in the classroom. Please do not send fees with your pre-registration form.

This class will satisfy the 9 inspection criteria as specified by the North Carolina Administrative Code. The primary objective of the course is to inform current and future chief officers of the various aspects and complexities surrounding the operations and organization of North Carolina fire departments. Emphasis will be placed on ratings and inspections, NFIRS reporting, prevention and grant programs, basic line-of-duty death information, financial considerations, and an overview of the various expectations facing a chief officer. (14 hrs.)

(DMICO) is designed to develop the decision making skills needed by Company Officers (COs) to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. It is important to understand that this course was developed for newly appointed Company Officers, an excellent review for experienced Company Officers, Firefighters who may have acting Company Officer responsibilities and Firefighters who want to become Company Officers. (14 hrs.)

This course provides training on resources for personnel who require advanced application of the Incident Command System (ICS). This course expands upon information covered in the ICS-100 and ICS-200 courses.
All Mid-level Management should take ICS-300, including:
Persons serving as command staff, section chiefs, strike team leaders, task force leaders, unit leaders, division/group supervisors, branch directors, and multi-agency coordination system/emergency operations center staff. (16 hrs.)

This class takes Emergency First Responders (EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement, and Rescue) through the different types of explosives, explosive environments, bombs and IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices), understanding how they function. The latest IED’s being employed overseas and domestically, how they are being constructed, the damage they can cause, how they are being employed by Terrorist against first responders, and what first responders need to do to ensure their safety against this new threat. It will take the first responders through bomb threats, searches and booby traps, all of which they may encounter in their jobs.
This course will be presented through classroom instruction as well as practical exercises including bomb searches, booby trapped areas, and live explosive demonstrations. (14 hrs.)

Chief Deputy Doug Cotton, Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, Special Operations and Hazardous Devices Unit Commanders, Graduate of the FBI Academy, as well as FBI Hazardous Devices School, and certified bomb technician.
Occult crimes and behavior are certainly a fast growing problem in our society. Emergency personnel are frequently encountering this type of activity with little information as to the seriousness or the devastating effects on our culture or to individuals. This course is designed to inform and familiarize students with symbols, terminology, safety precautions, and offenses as they relate to this strange and unusual subject matter. Materials covered will be in the area of Satanism, Witchcraft, and the Hispanic/African cults. The instructor will be sharing information in this class not intended to be distributed to the public. Recording devices or cameras are not allowed. (14 hrs.)

Whether you’re already an Officer or have a desire to be one, this course will help you to develop the skills you need to become more effective and efficient. Critical thinking, leadership, risk management, and strategic planning will be incorporated into this class. Students will be exposed to various group activities that will serve to enhance their abilities to lead in their department, regardless of their role. Application of sound principles and practices will be applied to case scenarios that can be incorporated into any department or organization. Learning how to overcome obstacles, setting goals, and progressively moving forward will elevate the student’s abilities to become a successful fire-rescue service manager. Students should prepare for this course by coming to class with a desire to excel in their organization, a willingness to learn, and the ability to adapt to a changing fire/rescue service. (18 hrs.)

Instructor: Winfield Abee, National Fire Academy Executive Officer
This class is a required course for anyone desiring to qualify as a Code Enforcement Official in North Carolina. It covers the general legal aspects of building code enforcement. The required texts are the 2009 Administrative Code and Policies book (the 2012 version is about to come out, but it won't be used for testing purposes until March, 2012) and the Rules for Certification. The Rules are in a handout which we'll provide when we start class. These two texts are mandatory because there is an open-book test at the end of the class which is based upon these materials. Books can be acquired from the bookstore at OSFM. (16 hrs.)

This course is designed to give the first responder the basic information regarding LP Gas Emergencies. You will learn about the characteristics, behaviors and properties of LP Gas through terms and definitions and classroom demonstrations. You will also learn about road and rail transport vehicles. You will learn basic tactic considerations and be able to recognize fight verses not fight scenarios. All this will be applied on the last day of the course with actual live burn scenarios utilizing what you have learned in class. Students will need full turnout gear including SCBA with a spare bottle. (12 hrs.)

The Swede Survival Flashover System offers firefighters the opportunity to observe fire behavior and the signs that lead to the "flashover" phenomenon in a controlled setting. By creating these conditions over and over again participants are provided with the knowledge and skills to deal with this situation. The class will be lecture and hands-on dealing with fire behavior, Flashover recognition, nozzle techniques, and survival skills in relation to fire behavior. Students must have full PPE including SCBA and spare bottle. (Students must be 18 years of age). (8 hrs.)

Get EVOLVED is a dynamic training course which provides classroom and hands on training in conjunction with case studies. The classroom portion includes awareness of intersection safety, rollover prevention and hazards of responding in emergency vehicles. The hands on portion provides the student with an opportunity to drive a fire apparatus in a virtual simulator testing their driving skills and allowing them to encounter hazardous driving situations. The case studies presented in this program will provide the student with actual fire apparatus crashes which have occurred and allow the student to identify areas of improvement from the lessons learned. (20 hrs.)

This 20-hour course allows participants the opportunity to earn certifications in Pediatric International Trauma Life Support (P-ITLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Professionals (PEPP). This session is based upon national standards for all courses and programs. The class will be at a level sufficient for EMT’s through EMT-P’s, RN’s, MD’s and any other healthcare professional that would benefit from any single course. Completion of the course will meet all Pediatric and OB requirements for National Registry re-registration.

NAEMT’s Advanced Medical Life Support course is the first EMS education NAEMT’s program that fully addresses how to best assess and manage the most common medical crises in patients, offering a “think outside the box” methodology.
AMLS is the most comprehensive EMS continuing cation course addressing the assessment and management of patients. It is for all levels of practitioners with a strong commitment to patient care, including first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists, and physicians.
The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, history, interactive group discussion on potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The course offers an initial assessment-based approach that progresses to a diagnostic-based approach to quickly develop the best treatment plan.
