Curriculum

The curriculum programs offered at Wilson Community College are based upon the Curriculum Standards established by the NC Community College System and approved by the NC State Board of Community Colleges.  Students can select from a wide variety of degree, diploma, and certificate programs.

The College Transfer Program, including pre-majors, offers courses in the arts and sciences leading to an Associates in Arts (A.A.) or the Associates in Science (A.S.) degree, or a Transfer Core Diploma.  These courses parallel those required during the first two years of study at four-year colleges and universities, preparing students to transfer courses or the degree in its entirety to a North Carolina four-year university and selected North Carolina private four-year colleges.  These programs are designed for students who wish to earn a baccalaureate degree in liberal arts or a science-related discipline.  The A.A. and the A.S degree programs each consist of 65 semester credit hours and can be completed in two years as a full-time student.

Students who successfully complete technical degree programs will be awarded the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.  These programs are designed to allow the graduate to enter an occupation with marketable skills, a high level of competency, and the ability to communicate effectively.  The curricula provide specialized courses to develop technical skills and general education courses to enable the student to be an effective member of society.  The A.A.S. degree programs range from 64 to 76 semester credit hours and can be completed in two years as a full-time student.

Options are also available through Diploma programs, which are designed to train students for entrance into skilled occupations.  Diploma programs range from 36 to 48 semester credit hours and can be completed in one year as a full-time student.  Certificate programs are designed to provide short-term focused entry-level employment training.  Certificate programs range from 12 to 24 semester credit hours of a series of specialty courses and can usually be completed within one to four semesters. Diploma and Certificate courses may also be applied toward a related diploma or A.A.S. degree program.

A developmental studies program, designed to strengthen students’ academic background, supports all curricula.
