Competitions

  • Student Competition: Students may submit one or more pieces for both the literary category and the cover art/photography category. Any student who submits more than one piece will only be eligible for one award in each portion of the contest. Students may enter both categories if they so desire.
  • Faculty/Staff Competition: Faculty/Staff may submit one or more pieces for the literary category and the art/photography category. Please note that the cover art/photography contest is reserved for students, but employee art/photography will be considered for publication.
  • The student and faculty/staff competitions will be judged separately.

Eligibility

  • The Student Competition is open to currently enrolled students at Wilson Community College—Curriculum, Continuing Education, and Early College.
  • The Faculty/Staff Competition is open to currently employed faculty and staff at Wilson Community College.
  • The Contest runs from October 25, 2016 – February 24, 2017.

Accepted Genres: Poetry, Personal Essays, Short Fiction & Cover Art/Photography

  • Poetry and prose should be mainstream pieces that avoid extremes in subject matter and language.
  • Personal Essays and Short Fiction should be a maximum of 2,500 words.  Shorter pieces are preferred.
  • Poetry should be a maximum of 50 lines.
  • All literary submissions should be titled, double spaced, and free of mechanical and grammatical errors (editors reserve the right to make any editing changes deemed necessary).
  • Art/Photography submission themes may vary, but no extreme subject matter will be accepted.  Art/Photography should be submitted as a .JPEG file.
  • Any work not submitted as directed will not meet contest guidelines and may not be published.

Format

  • All submissions should be typed in Microsoft Word and saved in Rich Text Format to ensure the file can be opened. Along with your submission (literary and/or cover art/photography), include a cover sheet with the following information:
    • For Students:
      • Your full name
      • Title of submission
      • Genre of submission
      • Your complete mailing address
      • Your telephone number (Including Area Code)
      • Your Student ID number
      • Your curriculum major
    • For Faculty/Staff:
      • Your full name
      • Title of submission
      • Genre of submission
      • Your complete mailing address
      • Your telephone number (Including Area Code)
      • Your job title

Submissions

  • Submissions will only be accepted via the Online Submissions Form on the Wilson Community College website.  Submissions will not be accepted via email.
  • Be sure to complete the submission form in its entirety and attach your file properly.  Any work not submitted as directed will not meet contest guidelines and may not be published.
