Applications and medical forms for the July 15, 2008 academy must be completed and returned by June 1, 2008 to assure acceptance.

Wilson Community College has an excellent history of preparing top quality firefighters. Approximately 96% of the firefighters graduating from the Cadet program have been successful in obtaining employment from fire departments all across North Carolina.

Mission
The academy is about more than just certifications.  Its purpose is to prepare the participant for the job.

 Its mission is to instill discipline, character, professionalism, teamwork, integrity, credibility and the physical ability, knowledge and skills to perform the job in a professional and safe manner while preparing the individual for the job.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Wilson Community College Fire & Rescue Cadet Academy is a sixteen (16) week program that allows the cadet upon completion to become certified in Firefighter I & II, OSHA Hazardous-Material Technician, R/T: Rescue Technician, NIMS (ICS) 100 & 200, and D/O: Emergency Vehicle Driver. An additional (5) week, Emergency Medical Technician Certification class is also available to all cadets. The program operates in strict accordance with regulations mandated by the North Carolina Community College System and the North Carolina Fire/Rescue Commission.

The academy also consists of live fire LP Gas Training, Rapid Intervention Training, Live Burn Training in acquired structures, History of the Fire Service, and Interviewing Techniques.  Physical Fitness is conducted each morning.

The Fire and Rescue Academy is scheduled two times each year (January-May and July-November).  All classes are held at the:

Classes are scheduled 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday.

ADMISSION OF CADETS
Candidates must be affiliated or employed (full or part time) with a fire/rescue agency to be eligible for enrollment in the Academy. A letter of recommendation or confirmation of employment must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. In the event the employing or affiliated agency withdraws its support, the cadet will be immediately dismissed. The Academy will give priority admission to candidates holding full-time employment with fire/rescue agencies.

All candidates must have completed an application and a medical examination within six (6) months prior to admission. A completed F-2 physical examination form, cholesterol-screening test, drug screening test and a criminal history background check results must be on file at the Academy prior to admission. Additional information may be requested at the discretion of the Fire/Rescue Training Coordinator.

COSTS
Registration fee is $ 65.00. If candidates are affiliated or employed with a Fire or Rescue Department the registration fees will be waived. Affiliated agencies may assist in the cost for books and uniforms. One book is required, "The Essentials of Firefighting".

The following uniforms and equipment are required; Academy Uniform, Academy Physical Fitness Uniform, and National Fire Protection Association approved Turn-Out Gear and Self-contained Breathing Apparatus. Uniform and book requirement information will be included in the application package.

CERTIFICATES
Upon satisfactory completion of all academy requirements, each cadet will receive a certificate.

LODGING
Limited lodging is available at Wilson Fire/Rescue Services. They also provide a "Ride Along Program" for interested cadets.

Course Descriptions

Rescue Technician (RT) and Level I and II Certification Classes

2 in 1

Participant can get two Level I and II or two RT certification classes in one weekend.  Register for one class each day or attend only one day (Saturday or Sunday) and take the class of your choice.

FFI Haz Mat Awareness  

The course meets North Carolina hazardous material awareness level standards and OSHA Standard 1910.120, as recognized by the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission.  (15 hrs.)

Arson Detection For The First Responder – (NFA)  

This first responder is often in the best position to make critical observations regarding a fire.  Observations of the first responder during the various stages of the incident are extremely critical.  This course will cover fire behavior, first responder observations, fire causes, scene security and preservation of evidence, legal considerations and reporting of findings.  (12 hrs.)

Basic Electricity for Fire Fighters and Investigators: 

The course defines electricity, how it is produced, and distributed.  It explains the typical household electrical system with demonstrations of the electrical faults that may produce fires.   It provides the firefighter or investigator with the basic knowledge and skill to competently evaluate the electrical system for electrical fire causes.  This course covers NFPA 921 “Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations” chapter 8 on “Electricity and Fire” and much more.  (14 hrs.)
            Instructor:  John Edwards

Basic Firefighting  

Designed for the firefighter with limited or no experience.  Subjects to be covered include:  ladders, SCBA, fire streams and hose practices.  Practical applications will be used extensively.  Turnout Gear Required.  (15 hrs.)
            Instructor:  Steve West has been the Chief of East Howellsville Fire Department since 1988.  He has 27 years in the fire service and has been an instructor for 16 Years.

LP Gas and Live Burn     (All in one)
Must be age 18 or Older

Class will consist of 2 days of live burn firefighting.  Groups will rotate between live burn training with LP gas fires and interior live burn structural fire fighting.  An acquired structure will be utilized for the live structure burn portion.  Participants must have met the training requirements of NFPA 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions 2002.  Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required.  (Spare SCBA Bottle if Possible).  (15 hrs.)

                                  Captain Jim Miller (Wilson Fire/Rescue Services)  (Live Burn)

Emergency Vehicle Driver 

The class teaches the importance of safe driving skills for fire apparatus drivers.  Students will learn North Carolina laws concerning apparatus drivers as well as defensive driving techniques.  Students will drive on Sunday.  This course is one of three required for Driver Operator Certification. 
*Students must possess a valid driver’s license.  (15 hrs.)

Heavy Vehicle Extrication   

This Class is designed to teach Fire and Rescue personnel the needed knowledge and skills for working with trucks, buses and other large vehicles.  The student will learn multiple lifting and stabilization techniques used with large vehicles.  Proper PPE is required.  (15 hrs.)
            Instructor:  David Pease has 33 years in rescue.  He is chief of the REDS team, a technical rescue operations team.

Driver Operator

 Introduction to Pumps  (NC Certification Course)

This course will explain job and individual requirements of the pump operator and safe operation of the vehicle.  It will also cover the basic aspects of positive displacement and centrifugal pumps.  (15 hrs.)
Instructor:  Tim Pope (Fire Chief, Nashville Fire Department)

ICS 300 (Intermediate ICS)

This course is designed for middle to upper level management.  This level of ICS takes the Incident Commander away from the typical day-to-day responses to those responses that could last for days.  Participants will learn how to plan for extended use of resources and facilities and plan for multiple operational periods.  (17 hrs.)

            Instructor:  Gordon Deno is the Emergency Management Director for Wilson County.  He has been a volunteer firefighter for 25 years.  Deno served as the Operations Section Chief in the Charlotte County Florida EOC after Hurricane Charley. He served as the Planning Section Chief in the New Orleans, Louisiana EOC after Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005.

     
Law and Administration

Any person who desires to take any of the North Carolina Standard Inspection courses must first complete the Law and Administration course. This course meets the standards of the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board.
            *Textbooks required, Legal Aspects of Building Code Enforcement in North Carolina from the Institute of Government, (919-966-4119), and North Carolina State Building Code-Volume 1-A Administration and Enforcement, and General Statutes and Rules of the Board Pertaining to Code Enforcement Officials from the Department of Insurance, (919-733-3901).  Board Rules can be downloaded from DOI web site:  ncdoi.com.  Books will not be available on campus.  You will need to order immediately.
This class meets on Saturday, January 27, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, January 28, 8 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Leadership I: Strategies for Company Success:   (NFA Course)

This 2-day course presents the Company Officer with the basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire service environment. The course includes techniques and approaches to problem-solving, ways to identify and assess the needs of the company officer's subordinates, methods for running meetings, and decision-making skills for the company officer. (12 hrs)

Strategy and Tactics (NFA Course)

(Formerly MCTO: Tactics) STICO is designed to meet the needs of Company Officers responsible for managing the operations of one or more companies during structural firefighting operations. STICO is designed to develop the management skills needed by company officers to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires.   (Table Top Exercise Included)  (14 hrs)

Managing Company Tactical Operations:  Preparation  (NFA Course)

(Formerly Managing Company Tactical Operations: Preparation (MCTO: P)) This course is designed to develop a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Company Officer in preparing their company for incident operations.  In addition, to clarify the transition from firefighter to company officer and the new roles relating to leadership and safety. This course is designed for company officers, acting company officers, or senior firefighters responsible for the management of a single fire company at an emergency incident. Those officers who are responsible for company readiness, personnel safety, and leadership as it relates to company operation.  (12 hrs.)

Vehicle Fire Suppression/Investigation

This is a specialty course that will train personnel in the unique aspects of vehicle fire investigation.  The course is designed to help the student learn about vehicle fires, vehicle fire suppression, why vehicles burn, and the investigation of vehicle fire.  Topics covered will include, but not be limited to vehicle construction, elements involved in vehicle fires, origin, cause and determination of vehicle fires.
Instructor:  Wesley Hutchins, Chief of Walkertown Fire Department and the Director of Fire Services Training at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem.

Basic Moulage

This course will train individuals on how to apply make-up on victims for special training and disaster drills.  This course will be held on Saturday, January 27, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

(GEMS) Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services

This course was developed by the American Geriatrics Society and the National Council of State Training coordinators.  It is designed specifically to help EMS providers address all of the special needs of the older population.  This course is 15 hours in length.  Class will begin on Friday, January 25, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., resuming on Saturday, January 26, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., concluding Sunday, 9 a.m. - 12 noon.
