American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment

In September 2007, Wilson Community College signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Upon signing the commitment, the College pledged to eliminate its contribution to global warming over time. The College established an internal structure, the Presidents Climate Commitment Task Force, from an existing institutional committee – the Sustainability Committee - to oversee the development and implementation of this commitment and begin the process of identifying tasks and actions the College would undertake to fulfill its commitment. The Commitment calls for the College to identify two tangible actions to reduce its impact on global warming and to conduct a campus emissions inventory to determine its current emissions and to establish a plan to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over time.

The PCC Task Force selected two tangible actions as required by the Commitment and submitted these actions to the College’s Presidents Council. The two tangible actions the Task Force selected for implementation were to adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy and to participate in the waste minimization component of RecycleMania and adopt three or more measures to reduce waste. A sub committee of the Colleges Sustainability Committee is in the process of documenting that the College is meeting its identified waste minimization activities.

The Emissions Inventory sub committee of the Sustainability Committee is in process of conducting a carbon emissions inventory for the campus to identify its sources of GHG emissions and to develop a plan to reduce these emissions. The process involves identifying sources of energy (i.e. coal, nuclear) for the campus, and the GHG emissions from these sources.

To date, the College has adopted an energy-efficient purchasing policy, participated in the 2008 RecycleMania competition, is engaging in actions to reduce its waste, and is conducting a campus emissions inventory. A report on the College’s initiatives, activities, and results will be completed and reported in September 2008 to the ACUPCC.
