Wilson Community College's Sustainability Poster Contest Winner
The Environmental Footprint Detective Game Winners

In June 2009, Wilson Community College launched a Sustainability Contest entitled "Turn Your Trash Into Treasure." The contest was open to all Wilson Community College students, faculty and staff. The participants were asked to consider what they would normally recycle or throw away and turn it into something artistic, innovative and useful. Participants were also asked to focus on how their creativity and imagination could be used to make the world a better place.
The contest had a good response and two first place winners were chosen. One of the winners is a student, Ms. Shanneil Evans. Shanneil is currently enrolled in Wilson Community College's General Educational Development Program. Shanneil designed an artistic creation of a "Jack In the Box" using cardboard boxes, newspapers, wooden popsicle sticks and various scrap paper materials. Our second first place winner was the Basic Skills Staff. The Basic Skills department decided to work on their creations as a team. They created three different types of items: drink coasters out of old college course catalogs and desk display cubes out of old floppy disks and college catalog photographs. They also planted seedlings in old plastic Wilson Technical Community College drink cups and wrapped the cups in recyclable burlap.
The winners of the "Trash To Treasure" contest were awarded a cash prize from the Wilson Community College Foundation. The Basic Skills Staff donated their cash prize back to the Foundation.
Shanneil Evans currently has her "Jack In the Box" creation on display in the Library. The Basic Skills staff have their creation items on display in their office area. Please stop by the Library and the Basic Skills Offices to see these creative and wonderful displays!
In March 2009, Wilson Community College launched its first "Sustainability Poster Contest." The contest was open to all Wilson Community College students. Students were asked to design a creative and unique way to illustrate and present "what sustainability means to them." Students were asked to convey a specific educational or research topic such as carbon footprint reduction, renewable energy, green technology and jobs, or a more personal statement such as elements of sustainable life.
The winner of our contest was Ms. Shanneil Evans. Shanneil is currently enrolled in Wilson Community College's General Educational Development Program. Shanneil plans to transfer to Barton College and pursue a degree in Commercial Arts when she finishes here at Wilson Community College. Shanneil has taken an immense interest in sustainability and in ways to help create less demand on the resources of our planet. When asked what the meaning behind her poster creation was, she commented that "recycling is what she truly feels sustainability is all about and that it will go a long way to help the earth's resources last longer." She also feels that "people who don't currently practice recycling need to start and to start as soon as possible because it is urgent where the planet is concerned". This is why her poster is entitled "Recycle Now." Shanneil would like to encourage other students here at Wilson Community College to use the Recycling Centers that are set up for paper, aluminum and plastic. Shanneil uses them all the time.
As the winner of the poster contest, Shanneil was awarded a cash prize from the Wilson Community College Foundation. She will also have her poster displayed in the upcoming literary magazine and in the Growing Green section of our site. Lastly, she will receive a printed copy of the new literary magazine.
