Creating Success - Hope, Opportunity, Jobs

Brenda Webb

Brenda Webb Brenda Webb began working in 1989 for VF Jeanswear. She thought she had a sound career, but in 2005 she was laid off. Brenda quickly discovered that a new career would require knowledge that only an education could offer. Brenda was given an opportunity to attend school through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program. Her family was excited and proud of her decision because no one in her family had ever attended college. Brenda visited Wilson Community College and enrolled in classes. At first it was tough because she had been out of school for a long time. Brenda became a representative for the Student Government Association, eventually becoming vice president and became a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. In May of 2008, Brenda graduated with an associate degree in Accounting and Business Administration. With her degrees in hand Brenda became employed with Wilson Community College in June 2008. Although losing her job at VF Jeanswear was devastating for Brenda she learned that there is a bright side to every situation. Wilson Community College provided that bright side for her by offering a warm and friendly atmosphere and a great place to get an education for a new career.

Wilson Community College offers Health Care Technology Certificate Program

Wilson Community College is adding to its continuing education programs. Beginning this fall, the college will offer a health care technology certificate program.

This certificate prepares allied health students to learn a variety of assisting skills that cross several health care disciplines. At least 430 hours in continuing education allied health classes will be required to complete the certificate over a three semester period. According to Elise Webb, Health Programs Coordinator at the college, "completion of this program will make individuals more marketable in the workforce because they will have a background in multiple health care areas."Health Care Techology

In the fall semester students will take the Nurse Aide I course and a Career Skills in the Work Place course. As part of these two courses students will become CPR certified and will also earn a Career Readiness Certificate. Students will then need to complete the Nurse Aide I state exam to be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. In the spring semester students will take either a Phlebotomy course or a Hospital Unit Coordinator course. In the summer semester students will take the Nurse Aide II course if they have successfully passed the Nurse Aide I state exam.

Completers of the program will be trained to work in a hospital, doctors' office, nursing home, or other health care facility. Individuals can find work as a Nurse Aide II, phlebotomist, or unit secretary. Starting pay for these positions is typically around $10 - $12 per hour, but can vary based on the geographic location and the type of facility.

For more information on the program or to register contact Elise Webb (ewebb@wilsoncc.edu) or 246-1325. Registration for the fall semester will run through August 5, 2010.
