Placement Testing

Curriculum students will be placed in english, reading, computer and mathematics courses on the basis of results of the placement test. This enables the student to enroll in these subjects at a point that is aligned with the student's achievement level as indicated by the placement test score. Scores and corresponding course placement schedules are available in Student Services. Certain course prerequisites may make it necessary for the student to enroll in developmental courses which are identified by a numerical "0" prefix (i.e., RED 080, ENG 090, etc.). Developmental courses may increase the cost and length of studies to complete a degree/diploma. Algebra placement test scores will only be considered for those students who place out of developmental math (MAT 060). Students who need a class from each of the three developmental areas can register for a maximum of 13 credit hours of instruction per semester. Registration should consist of one course from each developmental area and ACA 111.

Students who place into the Learning Center (below developmental level courses) must complete 80 hours of study in each designated subject area, then present a signed statement from the Learning Center staff before being allowed to retest and subsequently be accepted into a curriculum program.

COMPASS is a computerized placement assessment designed to identify any need for developmental coursework and is administered by the Student Services Office. The College also administers the ASSET test, a more traditional "paper and pencil" instrument. Asset and Compass placement test scores from other institutions will be accepted. Test score information must be received directly from the test site. Placement test scores are not used to exempt curriculum level courses.

Placement test scores become invalid after one (1) year if the applicant does not enroll and after three (3) years if, after enrolling, the student does not take the appropriate math, reading, and/or English courses.

Applicants who have earned college level credit from a regionally accredited institution for math and English courses will be exempted from corresponding sections of placement testing provided a grade of C or better was made. Applicants who score a minimum of 450 on the SAT math or verbal portions of the test or a minimum score of 20 on the english, reading, and math portions of the ACT will be exempt from placement testing at the College. All scores must be within the last three years.

Applicants desiring to retake any portion of the placement test (reading, writing, math or algebra) must wait at least three (3) months unless one of the following conditions applies:

  1. For the COMPASS test, those who score within 1/2 of the most recently measured Standard Deviation score for each testing area: 14 points for writing; 8 points for reading; 9 points for pre-algebra; and 9 points for algebra. (The Standard Deviation is subject to change as the data base of testers grows.) Those applicants may retest on any of the next scheduled test dates. An "Authorization to Retest" will be issued by the admitting counselor. If the applicant fails to achieve the desired score on the second test, he/she must complete all developmental courses in that particular subject area. Students who withdraw, or are withdrawn, from a developmental course are not eligible to retest. (ASSET scores for retest eligibility are available in the Student Services Office).
  2. An applicant who has been referred to the Learning Center for developmental work must present a statement signed by a member of the Learning Center staff certifying the completion of 80 hours of study in that particular subject area.
An applicant may test in math, english, and reading only three (3) times within a twenty-four (24) month period, REGARDLESS of whether the test is taken at another test site or for purposes of attempting to qualify for admission to any curriculum program. Applicants may take the computer skills placement testing only once.

The test results of applicants who do not follow these procedures will be invalid and will not be used to place of admit applicants to programs.
