Did you know that Wilson Community College has programs in place to assist our students along the way?
The Federal TRiO Programs, which was established under the Higher Education Act of 1965, are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO was derived from the first three programs that were created: Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services (SSS).
Wilson Community College has had TRiO Programs for over 40 years. In fact, WCC was one of the first in the state to have all three of the original programs. The College currently houses Student Support Services and Upward Bound.
All TRiO programs are funded by the US Department of Education. The programs serve and assist currently-enrolled students who may receive federal financial aid, are first-generation college students, and/or are individuals with disabilities. Students get the extra help they need to progress through their college careers, and some start sooner than that.
The Upward Bound program serves Wilson County students in grades 9-12 who attend Beddingfield, Fike, and Hunt high schools, which are our three target schools. We provide fundamental support to the students as they prepare for college, as well as when they become WCC students. The goal is to increase the rate at which they complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college, whether it be a two-year or four-year institution.
The College’s Student Support Services program, or SSS, gives our students a range of support. We offer opportunities for academic development like tutoring, assisting students with basic college requirements, and providing motivation to students along the way. Think of it as a cheerleader, or your biggest fan. SSS currently serves 250 students every year.
And as an added bonus, TRiO students and staff visit and tour four-year colleges and universities throughout the year – for free. Many students may not have visited any campus outside of Wilson, and this gives them an opportunity to see their options.
