hi i'm trish Holston secondary partnership director at Wilson Community College this will be an orientation on career and College promise or otherwise known as CCP for high school students that are taking college classes this is the first video in a series of videos to help you get oriented to certainly help you towards success in the future with your college classes so our first video is going to focus on three topics usernames passwords and Wilson Community College email and Moodle given these areas let's start with usernames and passwords and we use the sample student of steven johnson date of birth May 16 1998 with a college ID of 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 usernames for all students at Wilson Community College begin with the first name initial the last name initial and the last 4 digits of the Wilson Community College student ID number that ID number is located on your registration sheet you were given just below your name in the top left hand corner this will be an important number to pay attention to in the future and as you're logging in so for example SJ three four five six will stand for the person's user name above Steven Johnson so for example the username for Steven Johnson would be the s followed by the J followed by the last four digits of his ID which would be three four five six in terms of the default password the uppercase first letter of the last name the lowercase second letter of the last name and six digit birthdate once you do that in log in you'll be prompted to change that password and setup security questions it's important that you write that down because people have a tendency to forget especially if they use a different computer where they didn't save that information so Steven Johnson for example would be capital J small zero zero five one six nine eight those would be an example of the default password and remember you do have the ability to reset your password if something's not working I would try several times to make sure you got the proper letters and numbers but if you're unable to log in always try to reset your password once you reset your password it's reset for all the logins that you will need for email Moodle and student planning in terms of the College email your Wilson Community College email is your college email not to be confused with your high school email we ask that you check your college email every day it's critical that you do that because you could be getting information from our administrators myself especially your instructor the primary way to communicate with your online instructor is through email so if you're not checking that you could be missing critical information such as reminders and announcements and any changes that they might make in class if you do not check this email you are still responsible for the work and the information that is in those emails that is requested of you please remember this is not the same as high school email so it's really important that you check both sources because your counselor could be contacting you through email as well it's important that you respond quickly to these emails if you're confused you should ask for clarification and one quick way to do this I found is to download the free outlook 365 app on your cell phone that way you can push your Wilson Community College email address there set up alerts and get information in a really timely way keep in mind that this is your entire email you already know your username but then the remaining portion of your email includes at my dot Wilson CC edu so that's the email address to use now how do you go about logging into email you go to our website Wilson CC edu and you locate all these tabs across the top and that green tab area we've got a lot of links up there that are be important to you and obviously in red here's the email link you will constantly be using that email you should use that every day and once you log into that that email will take you to a site such as office 365 and you can see you'll have your username to put in the system as well as your password and it's the same password that you've created the entire time so even if you have to reset it it automatically resets here one important thing to note about our office 365 is that carries the Microsoft Office products so for example when you log in one of the things that you'll be able to do is email obviously but the other things include Microsoft Word PowerPoint Excel and many other features there those are free to you to download you can download them to up to five different computer devices we realize you may not be able to download that to Chrome but there are all kinds of resources that you can use there that may be important to you and as a college student all of that is free now how about logging in to Moodle Moodle is our online learning environment which is where you get to your online classes or a face-to-face class that includes information online again you go to our Wilson Community College email address and right next to the email you can see the Moodle link clicking on that Moodle link it will take you to the Moodle site to log in this will pop up it'll take a second to pop up here you click here to log into Moodle and once you get into that login page it is the same username and password as described before once you log into Moodle it'll look something like this we've got my sample page here this is what's known as a dashboard so it include includes a series of navigational bars over here and a course overview so if you're registered for one two or three courses all of those courses will show up but they will not show up until after the first day of class which is on your registration sheet every class has a Moodle 101 for student I tell students that is worth looking at because it tells you about how to post to forums it shows you how to read a grade book it shows you how your instructor could set up the course it is very very helpful one thing that is maybe a little bit sleeting though is remember that this is a dashboard you are not in your course yet but you may have some little bit of information here that may say something like you've got a forum post due or you've got a quiz overdue or something like that that is not always accurate because that relies on an instructor to put some things in the course manually that they may have not have done at the beginning of the course so I would not pay attention to anything here log in to the class that is how you will know what to do for example when you log in you will be directed to what's called an opening page for your course read the entire opening page for each course you're in every instructor every class has important documents and links that they require that you read here's just the beginning of an opening page for a general psychology class it can include a description it might say where to start and generally how to navigate things and if you look further down this still opening page may include a lot of links that are critical the syllabus is something that you should read right away it includes your course schedule how to calculate grades the course policies how participation is graded in terms of your absences study guides might be here if your instructor post that very important things underneath this information and you may have an enrollment activity that you have to do everyone will have some type of activity to do by a particular due date or you are not considered enrolled in class if you do not do it by the due date you may not be able to take you probably will not be able to take the class so it's important you do that due date that you submit that assignment before the due date you can also see here as an example of items that your instructor may or may not post here's an exam of some frequently asked questions I posted some examples of videos on how to study for classes and then you can see things like your instructor may post things in weekly modules or our weekly lessons and they will open up at the beginning of the week and have objectives assignments lessons that you have to either read or links that you have to go to or powerpoints that you might have to work through an instructor may post it in any variety of ways for further information I want you to know that you can always contact me here's my contact information phone an email address as well as a CCP website that on my C CPC CCP website there are a lot of videos on how to study and research careers and all kinds of things that might be helpful for you good luck with your future class and please watch the next video in line
