WCC’s Honor Society Welcomes New Members

On Monday, April 17, WCC’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Chapter Alpha Nu Tau held its induction ceremony. The induction ceremony is traditionally held to welcome new members into the honor society.  And coincidentally, it was held during community college month.  We didn’t plan it that way, but it’s an incredible way to celebrate and recognize our students!

Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 3.5 million members and 1,100 chapters located in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

This year’s ceremony welcomed 55 new PTK members. Led by Chapter Advisor Jeffrey Wilhelm, the program provided an overview of PTK’s history, mission, and values. The chapter’s current President, Amanda Thorne, and Vice President, Lenora Streeter, gave remarks about what PTK has meant to them and how inductees can take advantage of the opportunities to develop leadership skills.

Chapter President Amanda Thorne presented WCC President Tim Wright with a certificate of appreciation for his support of the Chapter during his tenure at the College. She also recognized the organization’s former advisor, Angela Grantham, for her tireless efforts to make the Chapter what it is today.

This past March, Amanda and Lenora attended the Phi Theta Kappa Carolina’s Regional Convention in Columbia, SC. Lenora is not only our local chapter’s Vice President, but she also served as a former regional representative. And Wilson Community College’s Chapter received three awards, including one for participating in the Regional HIA (Honors in Action) project, one for taking part in the regional service project, and the Carolina Super Stars award, which is given to chapters that actively participated in regional projects and events in 2022. Of the 80 chapters in the Carolina’s Region, only eight, including our own Alpha Nu Tau chapter, earned the award this year.

The PTK induction ceremony is a significant event that recognizes the academic accomplishments and potential of its members, inspiring them to continue to pursue excellence and leadership in their academic and professional careers. And this year’s inductees are well on their way to doing just that.  We’re so proud of them!
