College Partnership and Funding for Fiber Programs

Wilson Community College and the Foundation are thrilled to announce that the Wilson City Council approved $90,000 to fund scholarships for students beginning their digital workforce journey.

The College, in partnership with Gig East, Greenlight, and the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA), will offer various programs, beginning this month.  The goal is to provide education and training that will help create tomorrow’s fiber technicians, technical service representatives, customer service representatives, and technologists that are needed both by the City of Wilson and our broader technology, innovation, and entrepreneurial community, to help strengthen our community’s workforce pipeline.

Registration is open now for the very first course – FBA Fiber Optic Certification Course.  In fact, it’s the country’s very first fiber technician certification program.  And what better place to kick this off than in our community – the state’s first Gigabit City and home to Greenlight, our community-owned fiber network.

It starts March 29 and runs through May 25, and it’s designed to set future fiber technicians up with the skills and knowledge needed to install, splice, test, and maintain “Fiber to the Home” (FTTH) and Fiber to the Building (FTTB) systems.

At the completion of the course, graduates will be able to install, test, and troubleshoot components for completed systems, and have the skill set required for a career with organizations like telecommunications service providers, Internet service providers, and contractors.

The cost is $200, and that includes registration, technology and security fees, and the certification exam.

We’re thankful for our continued partnership with the City of Wilson, Greenlight, and Gig East, and we’re proud to be your community college.
