Register for sign language courses or apply as an instructor

Interested in teaching American Sign Language?  Wilson Community College is currently hiring for a full-time, nine-month ASL interpreter education instructor.

The interpreter education program at Wilson Community College provides students the opportunity to learn this unique skill set and make a good living upon graduation. In fact, it’s one of only a handful of interpreter education programs among North Carolina Community College System campuses.

At WCC, our students have the opportunity to earn both a degree and a certificate in the interpreter education program. The interpreter education degree prepares students to apply for a license as an interpreter in North Carolina. The deaf studies certificate is designed for students who wish to either sharpen or gain skills in ASL to better communicate with the deaf population.

We are currently looking for an instructor who is eager to advise our students toward successful completion of a degree or certificate in the interpreter education program. The potential candidate would also collaborate with our full-time interpreter education instructor to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to not only growing and learning, but enjoying the use of ASL.

If you have native fluency in ASL and you are excited to teach our students how to communicate and interpret using the third most commonly used language, please consider filling out an application.  Applicants must have a master’s degree in teaching ASL, linguistics, deaf studies or a closely related field in order to be considered for the position.

“Teaching students about Deaf culture, helping them to recognize the unique role of an ASL interpreter and watching their skills develop during their time in the program is truly rewarding,” said Catherine Johnson, interpreter education instructor.

Registration opens Nov. 8, in case you’re interested in taking classes.
