Meet the Mentors
Virginia Ann Speight
My name is Virginia Ann Speight. My major is Nursing, and my career goal is to become a Registered Nurse and later pursue a BSN. As a peer mentor, my goal is to assist my mentees in any way I can, whether that’s connecting them with resources or simply being there for support. I’m a people person who loves dancing, reading, and doing puzzles in my spare time. Most of all, I love being a parent to my four children and a “Glam-Ma” to my six grandchildren. When I started my journey at Wilson Community College, I didn’t know what to expect, but it has turned out to be an amazing experience.
Lydia Denton

I’m 17 years old and a senior at Wilson Early College Academy. I’m currently earning my Associate in Science degree and a Certificate in Criminal Justice. I plan to pursue Applied Behavioral Analysis with a concentration in Criminal Psychology. I want to help students do their best in their classes and have an amazing experience at WCC. A fun fact about me is that I play the guitar and love to sing!
Emilia De Jesus
I’m an Associate in Arts major planning to transfer and pursue Family and Consumer Science Education. My dream is to become a school counselor and teacher who makes a difference in students’ lives, especially those who feel unseen or uncertain about their path. I became a peer mentor because I know what it’s like to start over, to juggle life, family, and classes while still pushing forward. I want my mentees to know that no matter where they come from or what challenges they face, they can still build the future they dream of. If I can be a voice of encouragement or a steady hand to help someone through, then I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do.
Vanessa Cabrera-Baza
I am currently enrolled in the Birth through Kindergarten Education program. As a first-generation college student, I understand that navigating college classes can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I make it a priority to create a supportive and encouraging space for my mentees. As a mentor, I help students stay organized, understand class expectations, and develop effective study habits. Being bilingual in English and Spanish also allows me to support bilingual students and help bridge communication when needed. My goal is to empower my mentees to feel confident, capable, and connected throughout their academic journey.
Kevin Santiago-Jiminez
I’m currently a junior at the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology, studying to earn my Associate in Science degree. After high school, I plan to attend a four-year university to major in Public Policy with a minor in Latin Studies. I was inspired to become a mentor because, as a first-generation student, I understand how challenging it can be to navigate a new campus, a new school, and resources you might not even know exist. A fun fact about me is that my favorite subject is history. It reminds us of the events and conflicts that shaped our nation and how we can either learn from past mistakes or repeat them. Feel free to reach out if you need help!
