Student Support Services

Program Description

Student Support Services (SSS) provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their degree, diploma or certificate program. SSS also offers an opportunity for current active participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants to receive a grant aid award. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.

Eligibility for Program Services

To receive assistance, students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a 2 year degree, diploma or certificate program at Wilson Community College.

Students must meet one or more of the following criteria to be accepted into the program:

  • Receive Federal Aid/Pell Grant or provide proof of low income eligibility
  • First Generation (parents/ guardians did not receive a bachelor’s degree)
  • Have a documented disability/ registered with the Accessibility office on campus

To apply, students can complete the SSS Online Application, complete and submit the SSS PDF Application, or stop by the TRiO office in C110.

Tutoring Services

The tutorial component offers individual and group tutoring for students requesting assistance with assignments. The program employs both professional tutors and peer tutors, who are selected on the basis of academic performance, to conduct tutorial sessions in English, Mathematics, the sciences, and other subject areas, pending upon demand and tutor availability.

Monday- Thursday 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.

Advising

Individual and group advising on school-related issues is available to all program participants. Campus visitations to four-year colleges are scheduled to explore various college/career opportunities. In addition, guest speakers, workshops, book clubs and seminars are scheduled in order to promote students’ personal growth and development.

Supplemental Grant Aid

Supplemental Grant Aid is a financial award available to SSS participants through a generous grant from the US Department of Education. Student Support Services Supplemental Grant Aid is intended to meet the following goals:

  • Improve student retention by supplementing financial assistance for students with unmet financial need.
  • Improve academic success by reducing the number of hours students need to work.
  • Provide incentives for students to make timely progress in their degree program and to successfully complete their remedial coursework.
  • Demonstrate support for students who are actively using SSS resources to facilitate their academic needs.

The grant aid award application process begins in the spring semester of each academic year. Awards are typically dispersed within the month of April.
