The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology curriculum provides the basic knowledge to develop skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems. Topics include mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, and safety. The diploma program covers air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, tools and instruments. In addition, the AAS degree covers residential building codes, residential system sizing, and advanced comfort systems.
AAS degree graduates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of system selection and balance and advanced systems.
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate proper and safe use of tools.
- Demonstrate installation and start-up of various HVAC systems.
- Demonstrate proper maintenance procedures for HVAC equipment.
- Explain mechanical refrigeration, and heating and cooling theory.
- Demonstrate knowledge of electrical theory and an understanding of HVAC controls.
- Perform the process of designing a residential HVAC system.

Advanced HVAC Certificate (C35100A)
Upon completion of the Basic HVAC Certificate, or after experience working in the HVAC field, take the courses in the Advanced HVAC Certificate to upgrade your skills and stay current with industry trends. Topics include energy efficiency, system diagnostics, smart home integration, automated HVAC controls, advanced electricity, and air quality issues. Earning the Advanced HVAC Certificate could increase employability and potential earnings.

The Career and College Promise (CCP) Program provides opportunities for eligible high school students to start college early, where courses can count for dual credit (credit in the high school and college at the same time), all TUITION-FREE! CCP students accelerate completion of college certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees that provide entry-level job skills and/or lead to college transfer credit.
The AHR 160 Refrigerant Certification course in the degree, diploma, and some certificates may prepare students with basic knowledge of HVAC systems to sit for the Section 608 EPA Certification exam to earn the EPA Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling Certification.
To be eligible to take the Plumbing, Heating Group No. 1, Heating Group No. 2 and/or Heating Group No. 3 Contractor examination(s), an applicant must have 2 years (4,000 hours) on-site full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, service, or repair of plumbing or heating systems related to the category for which license is sought, whether or not license was required for the work performed. However, up to one-half (2,000 hours) (45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours) of the experience requirement may be in academic or technical training directly related to the field of endeavor for which the examination is requested.
