The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology curriculum provides the basic knowledge to develop skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems. Topics include mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, and safety. The diploma program covers air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, tools and instruments. In addition, the AAS degree covers residential building codes, residential system sizing, and advanced comfort systems.
AAS degree graduates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of system selection and balance and advanced systems.
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate proper and safe use of tools.
- Demonstrate installation and start-up of various HVAC systems.
- Demonstrate proper maintenance procedures for HVAC equipment.
- Explain mechanical refrigeration, and heating and cooling theory.
- Demonstrate knowledge of electrical theory and an understanding of HVAC controls.
- Perform the process of designing a residential HVAC system.

Build the necessary skills and fundamental knowledge to become an entry-level HVAC technician of residential and light industrial systems. Students may also opt to take the Section 608 EPA Certification exam to earn the EPA Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling Certification.

Upon completion of the Basic HVAC Certificate, or after experience working in the HVAC field, take the courses in the Advanced HVAC Certificate to upgrade your skills and stay current with industry trends. Topics include energy efficiency, system diagnostics, smart home integration, automated HVAC controls, advanced electricity, and air quality issues. Earning the Advanced HVAC Certificate could increase employability and potential earnings.
