This course prepares students to perform basic nursing skills for patients or residents in a health care related setting. Coursework includes lecture/class, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Aide I course, students will be eligible to take the NC Nurse Aide I State Exam (estimated cost $140).
Student’s successfully completing the Nurse Aide I course and passing the NC Nurse Aide I State Exam, will be eligible for listing with the Division of Health Service Regulations on the Nurse Aide Level I Registry in North Carolina. Initial listing is valid for two years following the written and skills evaluation.
The Nurse Aide will work under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse.

Students must have one of the following to take this course:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, or
- TABE test performance with results of an 8th grade reading level, or
- If in high school, the principal’s approval.
Students must submit proof of the following:
- Immunizations (including COVID or exemptions may be granted if approved by the clinical site)
- 2-Step TB Skin Test (within 9 months of class start date) or a TB Blood Test
- Flu Shot (October-March)
- Two MMR injections or titer
- Three hepatitis vaccines or two Hepsav-B injections
- Two varicella injections or titer
- TDAP within 10 years
- A valid American Heart Association (AHA) CPR BLS certification must be completed by the first day of class.
- An online Criminal Background Check and a Drug Test are required, information will be provided on the first day of class regarding this.
NOTE: Be prepared to pay $120.00 for the background check, drug screen, and health portal. DO NOT PAY FOR THESE SCREENINGS BEFORE THE DESIGNATED TIME.
Uniforms are required starting on day one of class and are to be worn for each session in class/lecture, lab, and clinicals. Uniforms consist of a navy blue scrub top and pants, along with white socks and white leather shoes.
An Analog watch (watch with second hand) is required.
Required textbook, NC Nurse Aide I, available at the Wilson Community College Bookstore.
