This course prepares students to draw blood specimens from patients for testing and analysis. A phlebotomy trainee maintains equipment used in obtaining blood specimens, masters the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients, selects venipuncture sites, cares for blood specimens, enters the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests.
Each student must complete 100 successful venipunctures and 40 hours of clinical in the lab in order to successfully complete this course.
Clinical hours are during the day time hours for 40 hours in a Clinical Lab, M-F 8:00am-5:00 pm. There may be weekend hours involved to complete the clinical requirements; clinical hour schedules vary as approved by the clinical site.
Students must have one of the following to take this course:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, or
- TABE test performance with results of an 8th grade reading level, or
- If in high school, the principal’s approval.
Students must submit proof of the following:
- Immunizations (including COVID or exemptions may be granted if approved by the clinical site)
- 2-Step TB Skin Test (within 9 months of class start date) or a TB Blood Test
- Flu Shot (October-March)
- Two MMR injections or titer
- Three hepatitis vaccines or two Hepsav-B injections
- Two varicella injections or titer
- TDAP within 10 years
- A valid American Heart Association (AHA) CPR BLS certification must be completed by the first day of class.
- An online Criminal Background Check and a Drug Test are required, information will be provided on the first day of class regarding this.
NOTE: Be prepared to pay $120.00 for the background check, drug screen, and health portal. DO NOT PAY FOR THESE SCREENINGS BEFORE THE DESIGNATED TIME.
Uniforms are required for clinical rotations. Uniforms consist of a purple v-neck scrub top, white scrub pants, white lab coat, and white closed-toe shoes.

Disclaimer: Clinical agencies may deny students from completing clinical rotations based on the results of the criminal background check and drug screening. Students may not be eligible if they have a positive drug screening or felony offenses (may include misdemeanors).
